The new 2008 Audi TT is a sure mark of its maker, sleek, refined and stylish, but at the same time edgy and rambunctious, squeezing precision performance and luxury any way it can. The 2008 TT is available in a Roadster or Coupe model, hard and soft top, and in a variety of trim levels. Retail price begins at a surprisingly palatable $34,800 for the base model Coupe; not bad for a slick, if diminutive, high-end sports car. But don’t let the size fool you; there is serious get up and go under the hood. This is an advantage for new buyers: in the past the Audi TT has not always received good power marks, and in fact has proven disappointing when compared to others in its class, BMW 335i and Porsche Boxster. So the increase in horses and torque shows a solid commitment to pumping up this vehicle’s muscle, without coming off as a muscle car. TT Coupe and Roadster FeaturesAvailable trim levels for the Coupes and Roadsters are TT 2.0, TT 2.0 T Premium, and the TT 3.2. The 2.0 models come armed under the hood with 200-hp (207 pound-feet of torque), 2.0 liter turbo 4-cyl engines with Audi’s FrontTrak front wheel drive system. The 3.2 model comes with the signature Audi Quattro AWD performance system and packing a 250-hp (236 pound-feet of torque), 3.2 liter, V6 aluminum-block powerplant for just over $41,000. This model of course allows for more driver dexterity with the Quattro system and an available 6-speed manual transmission not available in the 2.0 models. But the shifting overall is lightning fast — Audi reports 0.2 seconds for a gear change. The real performer in the group is the Coupe 3.2. Loosen up your tie or hitch up your skirt and stand on this little home wrecker’ s pedal: 0-60 is typically between 5.5 and a bit over 6 seconds and it will jump a quarter mile of track in 14+ seconds. It’s not a hot rod, but plenty satisfying for most, and drag racing is certainly not what the TT is designed for. Just take a look at the Roadster: a stylish little convertible that begs for cocky drivers, and add to that a pair of European-style roll bars for ultra performance looks.Audi’s Road Control is its StrengthWhere the TT hands down outshines some of its competitors is in stick-to-the-road performance. Audi packages the TT with the best suspensions it has available, including an optional magnetic-ride suspension system for sportier maneuvering. This car will hold a curve and cut sharply when necessary with much more agility than most. Steering is tight and sure. The body and frame components are a great balance of aluminum for racing performance and steel for appropriate heft.On the inside the TT delivers modern style with a hefty assortment of standard and optional equipment and accessories, constructed of high-end Audi materials. Standard components include a self-adjusting backlit instrument cluster, aluminum accents and full leather package. For consummate driver experience add on Sirius Satellite Radio, high resolution, full color navigation system, and Bose sound system.
